LPT: Things to look for when buying a new mattress

Recently saw some questions about what to look for when picking out a mid to high end bed.I used to sell furniture (including mattresses) and learned a lot about them. Here are the tips I always gave to customers and they are the same tips I gave my parents when they needed a new bed:Coil count: 800 coils in a queen is a midline number. Most mattresses will have the queen # highlighted as it is the most common size.Reinforced areas: centre 1/3 coils should be a different gauge wire (Kingsdown Brand)or have an additional mesh on top (Sealy Posturepedic). This is for lower back support. Some brands will have this feature some years but not others (Serta).Pocket vs Continuous coil: pocket for motion transfer reduction and continuous for longevity of mattress and strength. If you are a heavier person or sleep alone I would recommend continuous coil. If you are an average sized couple then pocket coil all day.pillow top vs tight top: pillow top is very much a “for show” piece that makes the bed bigger and fluffier and makes it look like more luxury than it really is. This is also the FIRST part of a high end mattress that breaks down. It is foam with some fillers. Just like the cushions on your couch, it will flatten and lose its structure/support over time. My recommendation is that if you don’t have a medical need (ie sensitive pressure points) where you NEED more cushion, alway look for the tight top or very small pillow tops. If you prefer a FIRM bed, stay away from pillow tops. Even the best of turn pillow tops will soften up significantly by the end of the first year.mattress cover: if it’s in your budget get a nice waterproof (not resistant) mattress cover. The best one I have had is made with bamboo fibers. This will save your warranty probably within the first year and is truly the only way to keep your mattress from becoming a dust mite haven. The rest: vented sides, micro beads in foam, cooling gel, antimicrobial finish, etc are all essentially buzz words and are features that all mid end and higher mattresses will have. via /r/LifeProTips https://ift.tt/37sDCYk
